As you wake in the morning after a deep and restful sleep at Fro Awel, peek out of the window and you’ll see Pen Y Gadair (the peak) of Cader Idris (Cadair Idris) luring you from your toasty pyjamas and out into the fresh air. Climbing in North Wales is the best in Britain and when you come here, you’ll realise why. There are multiple paths and climbs to Pen Y Gadair all with varying degrees of skill required from novice hikers to established climbers, so do your homework by heading here. The four main routes are 1)Foxes Path. 2)Pony Path. 3)Minfordd Path. 4)Llanfihangel Y Pennant Path. The landscape you see from the summit is breathtaking and when you get to “The Head of the Chair” You’ll want to bottle the feeling…but how you arrive there is up to you.
Llanberis is a mecca for climbers and really is the go to place for Trad-Climbing. There are Crags for all abilities so head over to Llanberis Pass for the day and hit some classic pitches, or just feast your eyes on the incredible (and arguably the best line) ‘Cenotaph Corner‘. The Pass has hundreds of facets and more climbs than can be written about here, so the guys at UK Climb have got it all here for you.
Half an hour from Fro Awel at Tremadog you’ll find Craig Bwlch Y Moch and some of the best climbing in Wales. Rock climbing for all abilities and the fantastic 75m 4 pitch route ‘Christmas Curry‘ and the E7 / 6b ‘Strawberries‘ .

coed y brenin forest
The Coed Y Brenin Forest Park is set within Snowdonia National Park and is just 8 miles from Fro Awel. It’s a fantastic recreation site with family friendly walks and bike hire. Spend the day with the kids doing the Animal Puzzle Trail Guide or go Geocaching with your friends before strolling to the on site cafe. The forest is ancient and beautiful with fantastic trail running and cycling. The kids have miles of forest to explore and 3 play areas to blow off steam, along with the ‘free play’ area where they can build dens and dam streams.
Mountain Bike Wales is trail riding at its best and it’s right on your doorstep. An incredible network of hand built single track, all weather trails including ‘False Teeth’ where you’ll find ‘The Cavity’ which will spit you out in style. If you’re new to biking and fancy a go, there are friendly trails for you too. For the technical experts, you’ll be grinning ear to ear at the variations and the rollercoasters will have you coming back for more.

Just 10 miles from the cottage you’ll find the award winning Corris Mine Explorers. A fantastic and rare opportunity to discover the subterranean world of the slate mines. Observe the virtual time capsule left behind when the last door creaked shut and imagine yourself a Victorian Miner carving your way through the rock over one hundred years ago.
